Every question we get asked about concrete grinding, answered straight.
Questions
How It Works
Do I need concrete grinding if my floor looks smooth?
Yes. A smooth surface often has a sealer or laitance layer that blocks adhesion. Grinding opens the slab regardless of how it looks. Skipping it because the floor appears clean is the most common cause of coatings peeling within the first year.
What happens if grinding is skipped to save money?
The coating bonds to the sealer or laitance, not the concrete. Within months it begins to peel, bubble or flake. Stripping and recoating costs more than doing the prep correctly the first time, and some coatings cannot be reapplied over a failed layer.
How long does concrete grinding take before coating can start?
Grinding a standard two-car garage slab typically takes two to four hours. After grinding, the slab is vacuumed and inspected before any primer is applied. The installer confirms the surface profile matches the coating manufacturer’s specification before moving to the next step.
Will grinding damage my slab or make it thinner?
Diamond-head grinding removes only the surface layer, laitance, sealers and high spots. It does not weaken a structurally sound slab. The installer targets the minimum depth needed to achieve the correct surface profile for the specified coating system.
Does Georgia’s humidity affect the grinding or coating schedule?
Humidity affects curing, not grinding itself. In Marietta’s humid summers, the installer accounts for moisture conditions when scheduling the coating application window. Grinding is completed first so the slab can be assessed for any moisture issues before product is applied.
Is concrete grinding included in the estimate, or billed separately?
Grinding, degreasing and crack repair are listed as line items in every written estimate. Nothing is bundled into a vague prep fee. You see exactly what each step costs before approving any work.
