Garage Epoxy Coating Questions

Every question we get asked about garage epoxy coating, answered straight.

Questions

How It Works

How long does the floor take to cure before I can park on it?

Return-to-vehicle-traffic is typically 24 hours after the polyaspartic topcoat is applied. The exact window depends on slab temperature and humidity on the day, and the installer confirms it in the written handover document.

My garage floor has oil stains from years of parking. Can it still be coated?

Yes. The installer applies a degreaser before grinding and runs a water-bead test to confirm the contamination is gone. Coating over untreated oil is the leading cause of early peeling, so this step is on the prep checklist for every job.

What happens if I delay coating a stained or cracked slab?

Oil penetrates deeper over time, making degreasing harder and increasing the risk of adhesion failure. Cracks also widen with seasonal temperature swings, which means more filler material and a longer prep time, both of which add cost.

Will the coating yellow under the garage door light?

Not with a polyaspartic topcoat. Standard epoxy topcoats yellow under UV exposure, but polyaspartic is UV-stable. The topcoat grade is specified in your written estimate so you know exactly what’s being applied.

Do I need to do anything to prepare the garage before the installer arrives?

Clear vehicles, storage and shelving from the floor area. The installer handles all surface prep, grinding, degreasing and crack repair, as listed on the prep checklist included with your estimate.

How do I know the primer chosen is right for my slab’s moisture level?

The installer measures moisture vapor emission before selecting a primer. The test result and primer grade are both recorded in the written estimate, so you can see the match before approving any work.
