Self-Leveling Concrete Overlay Questions

Every question we get asked about self-leveling concrete overlay, answered straight.

Questions

How It Works

How thick does the overlay need to be to fix my floor?

Pour thickness is set between 3/16 inch and 1 inch based on the depth of the low spots. The installer assesses the slab before mixing anything, and the specified thickness is written into your estimate so you know exactly what is being applied.

Can I apply epoxy or tile directly over the overlay?

Yes, once the overlay reaches full cure and passes a straightedge flatness check. Applying a topcoat before full cure traps moisture and causes adhesion failure. The handover record confirms the overlay is ready before any finish coat is scheduled.

What happens if I skip the overlay and coat the uneven slab directly?

Coatings applied over low spots form thin areas that wear through first and can pool liquid. Those thin spots are also the first to peel. Correcting the slab before coating is the only way to get a uniform layer thickness across the whole floor.

How does Marietta’s humidity affect the cure time?

Georgia’s humid summers slow moisture release from the overlay, extending the cure window. The installer checks ambient humidity and temperature before pouring. Your written estimate states the expected cure window for the season so there are no surprises.

Do I need to leave the area during the pour and cure?

Foot traffic on the overlay before full cure damages the surface. The installer will give you a specific re-entry time based on the pour thickness and site conditions, and that window is documented in your estimate.

What surface prep happens before the overlay is poured?

The slab is ground to open the surface, degreased to remove any contamination, and cracks are repaired. Each step is on a documented checklist that is completed before the overlay is mixed. Skipping prep is the most common reason overlays delaminate.
