Every question we get asked about terrazzo flooring installation, answered straight.
Questions
How It Works
What is the difference between cement-based and epoxy-based terrazzo?
Cement-based terrazzo is more porous and can absorb moisture over time. Epoxy-based systems bond directly to the slab, resist moisture and are better suited to Marietta’s humid conditions. The estimate specifies which binder is recommended for your slab.
How thick is a poured terrazzo floor?
Epoxy-based terrazzo is typically poured at 3/8 to 1/2 inch. Cement-based systems are thicker, often 1.75 inches or more. The exact depth is listed in your written estimate before any work is scheduled.
What happens if the slab is not properly prepared before pouring?
Pouring over a contaminated or cracked slab causes the binder to delaminate, sometimes within months. Fixing a failed pour means removing the entire layer and starting over, which costs significantly more than correct prep the first time.
How long does terrazzo take to cure before it can be walked on?
Epoxy-based terrazzo is typically ready for light foot traffic within 24 to 48 hours, with full cure taking several days. Cure times vary by binder type and ambient humidity, your estimate will state the specific timeline for your job.
Can terrazzo be installed over an existing concrete slab?
Yes, provided the slab is structurally sound, flat and free of active cracks. The installer grinds and degrease the surface first. Significant cracks or height variations are repaired before the pour, those steps appear on the prep checklist.
Does terrazzo require ongoing maintenance after installation?
Sealed terrazzo needs periodic resealing, typically every few years depending on traffic. Epoxy-based surfaces are less porous and easier to maintain. The handover document notes the sealer type used so future maintenance matches the original specification.
