Traffic Coating Application Questions

Every question we get asked about traffic coating application, answered straight.

Questions

How It Works

How is a traffic coating different from standard garage floor epoxy?

Standard epoxy is a single layer not rated for vehicle impact or abrasion. Traffic coatings are multi-layer systems, reinforced base coat plus a polyurethane or polyaspartic topcoat, applied at 20 to 40 mils dry-film thickness. That build handles the load without cracking or delaminating.

How long before I can drive on the floor after coating?

Polyaspartic topcoats typically reach vehicle-traffic hardness in 24 hours at 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Polyurethane topcoats may need 48 to 72 hours. The written estimate states the exact return-to-traffic window for the system specified on your job.

What happens if moisture in the slab is too high?

Coating over a slab above the product’s moisture threshold causes delamination once traffic loads are applied. The installer tests the slab before any coating goes down and documents the result. If moisture is too high, the job is rescheduled or a moisture-mitigation primer is specified first.

What if I delay getting the coating applied to a damaged surface?

An uncoated or cracked slab absorbs water with every rain event. In Marietta’s humid summers, that moisture works into existing cracks and widens them. By the time coating is applied, the slab may need significant crack repair or even structural remediation, both of which add cost and time.

Can a polyaspartic topcoat be used on an outdoor or open-sided parking deck?

Yes. Polyaspartic topcoats are UV-stable and won’t yellow under sunlight, making them the right choice for covered but open-sided structures. They also cure faster than standard polyurethane, which matters when you need to return a parking area to service quickly.
